Throne of David

Dear Brethren,

When I first heard Herbert W. Armstrong on the radio in the early sixties, one of the things that caught my attention was the fact that God was blessing America and Great Britain because of a promise that He made to Abraham almost four thousand years ago. Sure, I had been taught to pray for rain and peace, and things like that – but somehow God seemed to be distant and remote when it came to directing the affairs of entire nations.  I knew that God was Creator – but I surmised that after that, He was off in heaven just tweaking things now and then. The Radio Church of God broadcaster brought God right into the up-to-date happenings of everyday life.

The radio evangelist spoke of the “Throne of David,” and how it was being reserved for Jesus Christ – who would return very soon to claim it and establish the Kingdom of God over the entire earth.  I found the concept incredible that God was actually involved to such a large extent. It does seem to me that for some in God’s Church – God is a distant being who really is not all that involved in things. Looking at the history of the throne of David can give a person an entirely new perspective. God promised Abraham, “I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of you.” (Gen. 17:6) Speaking of Abraham’s wife, Sarah, God also promised, “And I will bless her, and give you a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.” (Gen. 17:16)

Isn’t it interesting that the lion plays a significant part in the emblem for England and Judah – and that the Queen of England is Jewish – and that she traces her lineage to the kings of Israel? God revealed to Jacob (Israel) things that would be happening now – in these last days. “And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days… Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?  The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes.” (Gen. 49:1,9-10) Jesus Christ is also, "The Lion of the tribe of Judah and the root of David" (Rev. 5:5)

Jesus is destined to sit on the throne of his father, David. “Thus says the Lord; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel.” (Jer. 33:17)  The angel told Mary, “Behold, you shalt conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.   He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” (Luke 1:31-33)   On the day of Pentecost, “Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words… Therefore, [the patriarch David], being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.” (Acts 2:14, 30)

These are only a few of the prophecies that are being worked out at this present time. Only God is able to fulfill His promises. Jesus will return soon and sit upon the throne of David ruling Israel and the world.
