Are we approved of God? Are we the genuine Children of God? Spiritually, how did we get to where we are today? An incredible number of actions on God’s part have taken place in order for us to be Christians. It is easy to believe that God is so engrossed in monumental activities that He is too involved to be mindful of us. As a young man, that is what David wondered as he tended his father’s sheep night and day.
“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visit him?” (Psalm 8:3-4)
And yet, God is entirely mindful of man because His whole purpose is to bring many of His Children to Glory (Hebrews 2:10). We are wrong to think that God is too far away and too busy to be concerned with the things that are happening in our lives. It is good that we know that He is wise enough, and that He possesses the unlimited capacity to intervene in every incident of our lives.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
God intervenes in our lives and brings us out of the ways of this evil world. He could raise up stones in our place – but that is not His way (Matthew 3:9). In His love, He desires that we, His Children, overcome this world – and He gives us the mind and heart to do so. He intercedes in our time of need. He never lets down. He answers our prayers. He brings circumstances about that we are unaware of. He creates, gives, and cares for us – in order to bring us into the unity of God the Father and Jesus Christ, and make us into His image. We know that God, through His Spirit, is guiding us into His truth. Jesus said:
“When the Spirit of truth, is come, it will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:13)
God motivates us, inspires and encourages us. He gives us the pattern of sound wisdom to keep us in His Truth. We are told by Paul to:
“Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it.” (2 Timothy 1:13-14)
Brethren, we have the confidence that no matter what opposes us, we will not be deterred with God on our side. We need not fear because we will be both protected and victorious in the end. King David expressed it this way:
“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust. Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flies by day; Nor for the pestilence that walks in darkness; nor for the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.” (Psalm 91:2-7)
God has called us and made us His children so that we can be able to begin to become like He is. This takes place when we receive His Spirit at our baptism – after repentance from sin and faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.
In today’s sermon we will look at some of the multitude of steps where God has intervened through the years. From the creation of Adam and Eve; the covenants with Abraham; all the way to the Israel of God, which is the New Testament Church brethren—leading up to this point in our salvation process. We must go back and begin before creation – to when God first conceived the thought of reproducing Himself. God’s Plan, and achievement of His will was very good in every aspect.
“God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)
