James the Just |
The Epistle of James is a book on Christian Living distinguishing between pure religion and false religion. James differentiates “going on to perfection’ from ‘false faith.’ For example, humility is profitable while favoring the wealthy is unchristian behavior. In a world of sentimental religion, James demonstrates that faith is dead unless it contains an active obedience to the laws of God.
Paul calls James a 'pillar' in the church. As spokesman of the council at Jerusalem, James had all the necessary characteristics of wisdom, character, conversion, single mindedness and education to pastor the first-century church brethren. Being very articulate, James has the best Greek in the New Testament – using uses 70 Greek words not found elsewhere in the Scriptures.
This short letter to the church brethren contains some of the most succinct and poignant instructions in the bible. “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Approach God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:7-8) James was patient, but he was not patient with hypocrisy – enjoy the five part Series on James the Just.
